The nomination period for Rodeo Corpus Christi, the first stop on the World Champion’s Rodeo Alliance (WCRA)’s 2023 Triple Crown of Rodeo has ended and only the top 48 tie down ropers on the RCC23 Leaderboard are eligible to compete for their share of the $550,000 total purse.

Rodeo Corpus Christi Format

Rodeo Corpus Christie beings with two rounds during qualifying on May 8 in nearby Robstown at the Richard M. Borchard Regional Fair Grounds. The top eight from the Division Youth leaderboard are also invited to compete in the qualifying rounds; they run at a separate incentive purse and are eligible to advance to the next rounds.

The top 24 from the average will advance to the progressive round, held during performances May 10-13 at The American Bank Center right on the bay.

The number 2, 3 and 4 ropers from the leaderboard are seeded into the progressive performances and will face off with the qualifiers each night in a sudden death competition. The top two from each night move on to the Showdown Round on the final night where they are joined by the number one roper from the leaderboard.

After the Showdown Round, the top three move on the Triple Crown Round, another sudden death competition where the fastest roper is crowned the champion, earning $15,000 and a custom surfboard.

Ones to Watch:

Leader Shad Mayfield has had plenty of success in the WCRA since its inception. In fact, he’s ranked eighth in lifetime earnings with WCRA with $141,892 won including a major event win at the Royal City Roundup in Kansas City in 2020 when he was still a teenager. Mayfield has more than double the number of points of second ranked Garrett Elmore.

#22 Kass Kayser is the only tie down roper in the field eligible to stay in hunt for Triple Crown $1 million bonus. That bonus is open to any athlete or combination of athletes who win three consecutive WCRA majors. Kayser is in the running thanks to his win at the Cowtown Christmas Championship Rodeo in Fort Worth in December.

Also in the field are past WCRA Major champs Shane Hanchey, Riley Webb and Kincade Henry, the reigning champion of Rodeo Corpus Christi.
