It’s ProRodeo crunch time and, newsflash, there’s more than one bubble to watch as the regular season winds to its conclusion. There are actually 14—the one for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) and 13 in the individual circuits.
After some slow months in certain regions, the activity intensifies as each circuit witnesses their own chase for a year-end championship and for a spot in the circuit finals rodeos.
Unlike the national level, which goes until Sept. 30, leaving just a smidge under six weeks left to rodeo, some circuits are already staring down their cutoff dates due to earlier circuit finals rodeos.
The Prairie and Badlands Circuits will conclude regular season competition on September 12 and 13, respectively, with the Columbia River (Sept. 19), Mountain States (Sept. 20) and Texas (Sept. 25) circuits close behind.
Here’s the circuit breakdown:
Jason Schaffer Tops Badlands Circuit Standings
At age 33, Jason Schaffer has been around the rodeo block a couple of times and seen his share of success. But this year, the horse trainer is enjoying a chance at a first circuit championship in the Badlands Circuit thanks to a special horse named Jewels.
“I have this 5-year-old mare that I took to some of the Roping Futurities of America events last year and didn’t get much done,” Schaffer said. “But she’s a phenomenal horse…and now she’s 5 and really beginning to excel. She has just been a huge game changer in my roping.”
A strong Fourth of July run kicked off Schaffer’s sprint to his current position atop the Badlands Circuit standings. He won Mobridge and took second in Mandan, earning $5,991 across two rodeos.
“That really gave me confidence in my horse,” he said. “She does good but she’s young, so I felt like I could take a deep breath after that.”
Schaffer hit a lull in mid-July but picked up $13,278 in August, with $8,844 of that counting toward the Badlands Circuit. He now holds a slim lead of $570 over Chase Lako with just about a half-dozen rodeos left in the circuit.
Only $2,000 separates the top four ropers.
“It’s pretty exciting; the top seven or eight guys have got more than $10,000 won and everybody’s roping good,” Schaffer said.
The RAM Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo takes place October 13–15 in Minot, North Dakota.
On the bottom side of the standings, only $1,500 separates the No. 11 roper, Rex Treeby, from Rance Johnson at 15th, setting up a good chase to see who will land inside the top 12 and punch their ticket to Minot.

Big Dodge City Win Launches Paul David Tierney To Top of Prairie Circuit
In the Prairie Circuit, Paul David Tierney used a massive Dodge City (Kansas) win to launch to No. 1, leaping over former leader Ryan Jarrett. Tierney won $14,378 in Dodge and added another $1,889 in Abilene to lead with $15,652. Jarret has won $12,725.
Meanwhile, the bubble race has five guys ranked from 11th to 15th battling for the final two spots heading into the Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo, which will happen in Duncan, Oklahoma, Oct. 12–14. Only $325 separates Nolan Richie, Riley O’Rourke, Marley Berger, RJ Straw and Wyatt Muggli but nearly a dozen rodeos are still on tap before the circuit cutoff, leaving this one too close to call.

Leaderboard Shuffling in the Columbia River Circuit
The Columbia River Circuit has been wild all summer with the lead changing hands several times, including a see-saw battle between rookie Joel Harris and Bo Pickett in the last month.
After a fourth-place finish in Canby (Oregon) last week, Harris is back on top by a touch over $1,400, but this one is far from done. The next three weeks until the regular season cutoff bring huge payouts in Bremerton, Kennewick, Ellensburg, Walla Walla and Lewiston, along with a slew of smaller rodeos.
The circuit’s regular season closes with a bang at the Pendleton Round-Up, so even the final 12 to earn a spot at the Columbia River Circuit Finals Rodeo in Redmond, Oregon, Oct. 19–21, can see a major shake-up on the circuit’s final day. For reference, three ropers won approximately $10,000 in Pendleton a year ago, leaving 12th-ranked Ty Harris’ $8,407 vulnerable to just about everyone.

Tyler Boxleitner Has the Mountain States Circuit Momentum
Tyler Boxleitner got hot in mid-July and has not let off the gas through the late summer fair run in the Mountain States Circuit. Boxleitner won rodeos in Steamboat Springs, Craig, Yuma and Eagle—all in Colorado—in the last few weeks to run his year-end total to $17,179.
NFR average winner Riley Pruitt is second with $15,675 won and JD McCuistion is less than $500 behind him.
On the bubble watch for a trip to the Mountain States Circuit Finals in Loveland, Colorado, Oct. 20–21, Chance Wall is holding down the cutoff spot with $5,919. Stratton Kohr and Kasen Brennise are lurking less than $700 behind with about half a dozen rodeos left until the cutoff date of September 20.

Cole Clemons Has $10,000 Lead in the Texas Circuit
The sweltering heat and high humidity signals a slowdown in Texas Circuit rodeo activity but as summer gives way to fall, the largest circuit experiences a rush of rodeos in its final month before the cutoff of September 25—more than a dozen.
Despite the money left on the table, Cole Clemons seems destined to finish as the regular season leader. After a win in Dalhart, a silver finish in Fort Worth and a bronze at Wichita Falls to kick off August, Clemons has extended his lead to an impressive $10,000.
On the other end of the top 12, the Texas Circuit’s bubble watch is chock full of veteran talent including World Champions Tyson Durfey, Monty Lewis, Marcos Costa and current world leader Riley Webb, who is stalking the field from 16th but only $600 from 12th. With big money left at Amarillo, Abilene and Stephenville, just about anyone in the top 30 realistically has a chance to compete at the Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo in Waco, Oct. 10–13.

Wilderness Riches
If there’s any doubt about how lucrative the summer run inside the Wilderness Circuit is, consider this fact: only one circuit leader (Cole Clemons in Texas) has won more than the fourth-ranked roper in the Wilderness Circuit.
World Champion (2013) Shane Hanchey has made it rain in Nevada, Utah and Idaho all summer, to the tune of $45,059—nearly a third of his total winnings for the year. More impressively, more than $40,000 of that was won since July 21.
Sharing in the riches are fellow Louisiana cowboy and second-ranked Zack Jongbloed ($29,105), third-ranked Matt Shiozawa ($26,033) and fourth-ranked Chance Thiessen ($22,214).
While the heart of the Wilderness season is done, there are still opportunities for bubble cowboys, although 12th-ranked Josh Jennings has opened up a lead of $1,789 over 13th-ranked Brayden Roe.

Haven Meged Tops Montana Circuit Standings
Just as one World Champ took over the Wilderness, another climbed to the top of his circuit standings. Haven Meged had not won any circuit money on July 21 but now leads the Montana Circuit with better than $16,000 won. He skyrocketed to the lead with wins in Billings, Missoula, Helena and in a go in Great Falls.
While Meged seems comfortable at the top, the race for the 12th spot into the Montana Circuit Finals Rodeo is still up in the air. Only $300 splits the 11th-, 12th- and 13th-ranked ropers, with just five weeks yet to rodeo.

Chance Oftedahl Kicks His Way to the Top of the Great Lakes Circuit
For much of the summer, the race for the Great Lakes Circuit championship has looked like a two-man race between Cody Huber and Blake Ash. But Minnesota cowboy Chance Oftedahl clawed his way to the top thanks to a big win at the Sikeston (Missouri) Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo on August 12.
Oftedahl earned nearly $6,192 in Sikeston and now holds an $830 lead over Huber.
There are still a ton of rodeos left in the 2023 season, so the bubble watch is premature with several cowboys stacked up close to the 12th position.

Circuits Holding Steady
There has been no change atop the standings in five circuits during the last month. In part, that’s because circuits like the Turquoise and Southeastern have had few rodeos. In places like California, the First Frontier, and the Maple Leaf, the leaders have simply continued to dominate.
Hayden Ford took the lead in the Turquoise Circuit after the Fourth of July and holds a slim lead over closing Joseph Parsons. Kyle Dutton holds the 12th spot currently, $311 behind 11th-ranked Colten Wallis and $88 ahead of Hiyo Yazzie. Reigning NFR Open Champ Garrett Jacobs is 14th, less than $200 behind Dutton.
Blake Chauvin is still leading in the Southeastern Circuit, just about $1,000 ahead of Michael Otero. On the bubble is 12th-ranked Riley Istre with $7,912 won. He trails 11th-ranked Tatum Miller by about $500 and leads 13th-ranked Artrell Carmouche by just over $200. After months of quiet, the Southeastern Circuit is about to get very busy again.
Jordan Ketscher holds a comfortable lead in the California Circuit, just under $6,000 ahead of new No. 2 Jason Andersen. While there are about eight more rodeos to contest, the bubble is tight with just about $1,300 separating the 10th- and 14th-ranked cowboys.
Zane Kilgus has dominated the First Frontier Circuit in recent years, capturing titles in the tie-down, team roping and steer wrestling en route to the All Around. He’s opened up a big lead for the 2023 year-end championship in the tie-down, winning nearly double his closest competitor thus far.
Beyond Kilgus, the standings are pretty stacked up with fifth-ranked Ty Rumford having just $2,000 on the 15th-ranked roper Charlie Goerlach, with plenty of rodeos left during the final five weeks of the season.
North of the border, Kyle Lucas holds strong to his lead in the Maple Leaf Circuit though he is facing challenges from brothers Shane and Jason Smith as well as Logan Bird. About seven more Canadian Pro Rodeo Association rodeos and a handful south of the border remain on the Maple Leaf schedule.
