As the month of June closes out with a flurry of activity—29 rodeos ended during the weekend of June 23-25—the top 15 competitors in the race for the NFR did not change, though there were some moves amongst the group including Luke Potter moving 13 places.
Top 15 rundown
The big takeaway? Riley Webb is not going anywhere. The World leader kept pace with Reno Rodeo Champion Shad Mayfield by winning second and earning just $123 less than Mayfield for the weekend. Tough to make up ground at that pace, particularly when you understand that Webb holds a $71,766 lead. To Mayfield’s credit, he did leapfrog Hunter Herrin and is now ranked second.
Elsewhere within the top 15, Brush Minton made the biggest move, jumping from ninth to fifth after earning $18,640 on the strength of a win at Santa Ynez, California, a No. 5 finish in Prineville, Oregon, and a No. 4 finish in Reno after winning the second round. Minton was the high money winner of the weekend.
Rank | Athlete | Winnings (as of 6/26/23) |
1 | Riley Webb | $147,402 |
2 | Shad Mayfield | $75,636 |
3 | Hunter Herrin | $65,741 |
4 | Westyn Hughes | $65,684 |
5 | Brushton Minton | $62,070 |
6 | Riley Pruitt | $53,054 |
7 | Haven Meged | $50,028 |
8 | Micheal Otero | $49,826 |
9 | Blane Cox | $49,329 |
10 | Cory Solomon | $48,895 |
11 | Trevor Hale | $46,334 |
12 | Tuf Cooper | $42,221 |
13 | Ty Harris | $42,049 |
14 | John Douch | $39,257 |
15 | Shane Hanchey | $38,923 |
16 | Marcos Costa | $36,485 |
17 | Lane Livingston | $36,062 |
18 | Reese Riemer | $35,408 |
19 | Luke Potter | $34,965 |
20 | Britt Bedke | $32,460 |
Haven Meged also parlayed Reno success into a standings jump, moving from No. 11 to No. 7.
As Reno closed out its 2023 run, the old cowboy adage that the rodeo season actually begins in Reno will be put to the test once again as the thousands of dollars available to competitors from now until September 1st tempts those not currently ranked in NFR territory.
Ones to watch include the reigning and four-time World Champ Caleb Smidt, who won about $1,300 this weekend—but is winning Greeley, Colorado, and getting hot just as the Fourth of July run arrives.
Idaho roper Britt Bedke was another guy on a big climb this weekend; after winning both Mountain Home, Idaho, Prineville and picking up a check in Meridian. He won $8,576 over the weekend to move into the No. 20 spot. He was ranked No. 30 a week ago.
Luke Potter’s speedy rise
Another cowboy hoping to slingshot this weekend’s success into the lucrative Cowboy Christmas run is Luke Potter. Potter made the biggest move of the week, catapulting from No. 32 all the way to No. 19 with his third-place win in Reno.
“Reno is one of my favorite rodeos,” Potter, 23, said. “Drawing good is a big part of the equation and I was lucky to draw some good ones. I tried to score good, get them roped and not make any huge mistakes.”
Thanks to a second-place finish in the short go and the big average check, he won $11,217 in Nevada to close to within $3,958 of Shane Hanchey, the current occupant of the cut-off spot at 15th.
Unfortunately, it was good news-bad news. Potter’s good horse Snoopy was injured during his Reno runs which is terrible timing as the Fourth of July run is underway already.
“I sent him home and he’s going to the vet tomorrow. I’m mounting out here in Ponoka and Greeley tomorrow,” Potter noted.
Potter hauls with Stetson Vest and Chance Thiessen and both have offered up their good horses to help.
“I really appreciate those guys and I’m waiting for the right run [to borrow them],” he said but added that he didn’t want to put undue stress on horses who already would be making plenty of runs this week.
Instead, Potter is squeezing in a horse finding expedition in between what will be a very busy few days.
“We’ve got two days off [after Greeley] before Oakley so I’m lining up to go try some horses,” he said. Barring that, he’s got a plan-B in mind too.
“I’ve let a few guys ride Snoopy and they’ve won on him and now they’ve got really nice horses so I may have to call in a few favors.”
Potter competed in Reno before flying to Greeley to get in another rig headed to Canada. A group of them chartered a flight back for the short go in Reno on Saturday and then back for Ponoka on the 26th. Then they’ll drive back to Greeley.
“Not as busy as most people,” Potter said of their Fourth of July plans, then added, “I say that when we’re going 16 hours back to Greeley tonight.”
After Greeley—and hopefully a successful horse search—the group competes in Oakley, Utah, then Williams Lake and the Ponoka short go or West Jordan before heading to the Northwest for St. Paul, Mollala, Eugene (all Oregon) and Basin City, Washington.
“Getting up here, we had to hustle but it really hasn’t been too bad,” Potter said. “Going back to Williams Lake will be all day and night getting there and all day back.”
Unlike some competitors, the trio is on their own for the busy week.
“We are our own helpers,” Potter joked.
It’s worth the sleepless night and exhaustion in pursuit of the ultimate goal: a berth at the NFR.
Potter has been lurking around the top 25 since claiming the Rookie of the Year title in 2020.
“I never try to worry about [the standings],” he said. He has finished 24th, 26th and 23rd in the last three seasons. “I might start looking around the first of August, just to check on my number of rodeos and where things stand. If I’m looking at the standings too much, then I’m thinking about it too much,” he added.
