Canadian native Walker Warkentin secured his first PRCA win in the tie-down roping at the Last Stand Rodeo on May 26th in Coulee City, Washington.

Originally from Calmar, Alberta, Warkentin entered the arena with one goal in mind — rope good enough to earn a check. Tying his calf in 9.5 seconds, he not only achieved his goal but took home $1,636 in prize money and the 2024 Last Stand Rodeo Tie-Down Roping Champion buckle.

“Winning a PRCA rodeo has been a goal of mine for a long time,” Warkentin said. “This was only my eighth PRCA rodeo, and it means a lot to win this one.”

The 20-year-old cowboy entered with $1,200 in PRCA earnings to his name. After this win, he more than doubled his earnings. However, going into the rodeo, he focused less on winning and more on executing a solid run.

“It’s just like any other rodeo; I don’t like looking into it to win,” Warkentin said. “I’m trying to go into it and do the best I can do. If I draw good, do my job, and I get paid, that’s great. If not, I just go to the next one.”

Warkentin said his bay gelding, Peanut, played a huge role in his victory and has been his trusted partner for this year’s rodeo season.

“This horse is special, we bought him from a family friend last fall,” Warkentin said. “He has been nothing but great for me and my family.”

With their first PRCA win under their belt, they have bigger goals on the horizon.

“My three big goals for this year are to make the Canadian Finals, Permit Finals and the Maple Leaf Circuit Finals,” Warkentin said.

As a junior at Cisco College, he plans on establishing his PRCA rookie career while in school and continuing to rope professionally after he graduates.

“My plan is to rope,” Warkentin said. “Hopefully, if all goes well, next year will be my rookie year.”
