Twelve calf ropers will nod their head Sunday, July 26, in the final round of tie-down roping at the 2026 Cheyenne Frontier Days.
The pen has a little bit of everything: a grade gelding, three mares and a horse from Brazil. What they almost all have in common is Doc Bar, or Doc O’Lena, or Peppy San Badger, or some combination of all three threading through multiple generations.
- OCD On Cows “Captain” is the oldest horse in Sunday’s finals at 15 years old. Fill The Thrill “Thriller” and Stylish Cowboy “Rico” are the youngest at 9 and 8 years old, respectively. Among the nine horses with confirmed ages, the field averages 12 years old.
- There are three mares in Sunday’s field: Precious Merada “Merada”, Bet U Do “Cookie” and Sailin In The Light “Loddie”. Cole Eiguren’s “Stoner” is a grade gelding. Every other horse is a registered gelding.
- High Brow Cat has three horses in this field. He’s the grandsire of Bet U Do (through Cat Man Do), the sire of Cats Merada—which makes him the grandsire of Precious Merada—and he appears twice in Fill The Thrill’s pedigree: once in the sire’s dam (Boon San Kitty by High Brow Cat) and once directly as the dam’s sire.
- The two “Stylish” horses in the field—Shane Hanchey’s Stylish Bugsy and Britt Bedke’s Stylish Cowboy—both trace to Docs Stylish Oak. Bugsy gets it through his dam, A Stylish Junebug (by Docs Stylish Oak). Rico gets it through his sire’s grandsire, Playin Stylish (also by Docs Stylish Oak).
- Grays Starlight (by Peppy San Badger) quietly connects two horses in this field: he’s in the sire line of Sailin In The Light (Quixote Light by Grays Starlight) and in the dam line of Stylish Cowboy (Delight of My Life by Grays Starlight).
- Britt Bedke and Brayden Roe are both competing Sunday on the same horse—Stylish Cowboy, “Rico.”

Makin Hickory RLD, “Hickory,” Brazilian-registered Quarter Horse (ABQM #P190737)
Makin Hickory RLD is the only horse in Sunday’s field registered with Brazil’s ABQM rather than the AQHA. He was previously owned and trained by Brazilian horseman Daniel Carvalho for six years before being sold to Solomon, and they won plenty together in Brazil before Carvalho let him go.
His pedigree has a lot of American influence: sire Makin A Play is by Doc O’Lena out of Playboys Madera (a Freckles Playboy daughter out of Doc’s Madera by Doc Bar). His dam, Quimera Hickorys TH, is by Playgun out of Hickorys Quickette, who traces to Doc’s Hickory and Doc’s Able Mable—both by Doc Bar. That’s the same Playboys Madera that shows up in the dam line of A Dera Dual Lena, making Stylish Bugsy and Makin Hickory RLD grandchildren of the same mare.
