Trevor Hale made the most of the second weekend in June by winning the Sisters Rodeo in Oregon while titan Shad Mayfield continued his tremendous roll closer to home in Texas.

The week provided a great summer preview in terms of money-making opportunities for cowboys as 14 ropers in the top 50 earned more than $4,000 during the weekend’s rodeos.

No changes to the top of the PRCA Standings watch this week with Shad Mayfield still leading the way. While Mayfield’s current lead made it impossible for him to lose #1 spot in the PRCA World Standings, he certainly didn’t leave much room for doubters either. Mayfield roped a win at the Parker County Sheriffs Posse Frontier Days and PRCA Rodeo in Weatherford, Texas worth $4,043. He also grabbed a check in Cleburne, staying close to home without giving up ground.

Trevor Hale tops the charts

There were two stops on the NFR Playoff Series over the weekend: Woodward, Oklahoma and Sisters, Oregon and the latter helped produce the number one money winner of the weekend.

Trevor Hale is taking home the coveted Sisters Rodeo Buckle for 2024 after tying two calves up in 18.3 seconds to earn $6,579.

“My first calf, I had a first run, and I got kicked and was 10.6,” Hale, 21, said. “But I got passed him, so it was really good. My second one was a stronger calf but I got a good start and it happened fast.”

In fact, his second round time of 7.7 seconds was just one-tenth off the arena record in Sisters set in 2017 by Westyn Hughes and took the round win. His two-run total was three tenths ahead of the field.

A fourth generation rancher who calls Perryton, Texas home, Hale has a colorful resume which includes AQHYA World titles in roping, a Reserve College National Finals Rodeo finish, all-around titles at major ProRodeos like the Prescott Frontier Days, and Reserve finishes in the All Around and Rookie of the Year races back in 2022 behind Riley Webb. Hale also holds the distinction of being the NRCHA’s World’s Greatest Youth Horseman inaugural winner back in 2019.

As a competitor in the cow horse and rope horse futurity world along with being a rodeo cowboy, Hale can appreciate the value of good horsepower and is relying upon Hard Times, a 15-year old gelding he bought from Kase Bacque for the 2024 run.

“I’ve had him about a year,” Hale said. “But this past winter I really started taking him to the rodeos and I’ll be riding him for the summer.”

Sisters was just one stop in a busy week for Hale and hauling partner Lane Livingston, who ironically won the first round in Sisters to give the truck the clean sweep. The duo ventured from Woodward to the West Coast, hitting rodeos in Livermore (California), Eagle (Idaho) and Union (Oregon) along with Sisters.

Livingston claims he does all the driving, but Hale notes his buddy, “likes to drink coffee and watch the yellow lines go by,” a trait that will serve the pair well as they next travel to the midwest for a rodeo in North Platte.

Meanwhile, both cowboys grabbed checks in Livermore as well, pushing Hale’s total weekend haul to an event best $7,862, bumping him from 22nd all the way to 14th in the standings.

Now in his third year in ProRodeo, Hale has finished 22nd and 26th in the last two seasons, respectively, and has his sights firmly on getting into the top 15 for a chance to rope at the NFR.

But don’t expect him to be watching those standings.

“I figure it’s going to take $125,000 to make ‘em so I still have $100,000 to win before I look at it,” he joked.

ProRodeo Tie-Down Roping Weekend Recap

Elsewhere, Tanner Green picked up his second Playoff Series win in Oklahoma after claiming the title at the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo in Denver back in January. Green tied one down in the mud in 8.3 seconds to collect $4,299 and is now ranked 43rd.

Luke Potter took the victory at the Livermore Rodeo, and did well in Sisters, earning just over $5,000, while Michael Otero won in Eagle (Idaho) to earn $4,864 but it was second placed Riley Webb who earned the most there after pocketing $5,198.

Ryan Jarrett, Riley Pruitt are back?

Two perennial NFR guys who have been quiet thus far in 2024 used big weekends to jump up in the standings, providing some pressure to those ahead of them.

Ryan Jarrett has been on a big roll since the calendar rolled over to June. The 2005 PRCA World Champion All Around Champion Cowboy already has 14 NFR’s on his resume but he hasn’t competed in Las Vegas since 2021.

After only earning one check in May, Jarrett has been perfect so far this month and has nearly doubled his season earnings in the last two weeks.

During the second weekend of June, Jarrett snagged second in Woodward for a big check and also placed in Ponca City (Okla.) and Weatherford to bank $6,954, second best of all tie down ropers this weekend.

Jarret jumped 12 spots from 38th to 26th.

Hot on his heels is former NFR Champion Riley Pruitt who won $5,162 thanks to wins in Elizabeth (Colo.) and Monticello (Utah). Pruitt was also on the move in the standings as he is now 28th after starting the weekend 37th.

Inside the Top 15

Although there was some shuffling within the top 20, it was 2017 PRCA World Champion Marcos Costa who had the best weekend, finishing as third high money winner. Staying home in Texas, Costa earned $5,300 with a pair of silver finishes in Cleburne and Coleman and took home a check from Gladewater, too. He moved from 17th to 13th in the standings.

What’s Next

Call it a pause to catch their breath. After a very busy weekend—and just before the summer really cranks up—the middle week of June is fairly quiet for those on the World Standings track. There is one stop on the Playoff Series, the Dinosaur Round-Up in Vernal, Utah, which moved from its previous home in mid-July.

Apart from Vernal, there’s old stalwarts like the Buffalo Bill Round-Up in North Platte, Nebraska and the Daines Ranch Rodeo in Innisfail, Alberta along with some new rodeos growing their purses like Adrian Newtown (North Dakota) Rodeo Days and the Stavely (Alberta) Indoor ProRodeo.
