The 2024 Calgary Stampede is underway in Alberta, Canada, and the best rodeo athletes, including tie-down ropers have once again gathered to duke it out for the $50,000 win at one of the world’s most prestigious rodeo events.

The Calgary Stampede basics

The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo, exhibition, and festival held every July in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Known as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth,” it attracts over a million visitors from around the world. The event spans ten days and features a variety of activities, including one of the world’s largest rodeos, a parade, midway, stage shows, concerts, agricultural competitions, chuckwagon racing, and First Nations exhibitions.

The rodeo is the highlight of the Calgary Stampede, offering all standard professional events, sparing the team roping and breakaway roping. The chuckwagon races, known as the Rangeland Derby, are another major attraction, drawing crowds to witness the thrilling and competitive races.

The Stampede also emphasizes Western heritage and culture, showcasing the skills and traditions of the cowboy lifestyle. The event has a significant economic impact on the city, contributing to tourism and local businesses. Beyond the entertainment, the Calgary Stampede is deeply rooted in the community, with volunteers playing a crucial role in its organization and success.

The Calgary Stampede format

The Calgary Stampede implemented a new format in 2023, featuring three pools of competitors that compete across three days of competition, with the top four from each pool (for a total of 12) advancing to the championship round on Sunday, June 14. Advancement is determined off total money won across the three rounds in each Pool.
