Myles Nixon has a decade of rodeo experience at only 16 years old, and bested his seniors in the Hooey Jr. Patriot 19-and-Under Tie-Down Roping with an 8.97-second time, winning $22,000.
“I saw my start—we were going with a big move to make sure [the calf] was going,” the Amistad, New Mexico cowboy said. “Then go catch him, keep him up, then tie him down. He got up on the guy before, so I really made sure to wrap him tight.”
The run was a satisfying conclusion on a week full of competition in both the 15-and-19-and-Under tie-down roping for Nixon.
“I’m competitive, but I still try to make smart runs,” Nixon explained. “I did tear the barrier down going for it in the 15-and-under, and I guess that wasn’t very businessman-like.”
But riding homebred mare “Yawa,” Nixon got the big win. According to Nixon, she’s not very broke and “crazy,” but can outrun any calf.
When asked about his goals, Myles Nixon said he’s aiming big. He plans to make the NFR as soon as possible and win the World Championship, forgoing college to get started on his ProRodeo career.
