Things got a bit faster in the tie-down roping on night two of the 2024 Governor’s Cup in Sioux Falls. Shad Mayfield and Shane Hanchey split the round with a 7.2 to pick up $9,625 a man (*unofficially), and the field for the eight-man Semifinals is set.
Here’s CalfRoping.com‘s play-by-play of the round:
Shad Mayfield nailed the start and got it on his calf to be fast. Lollipop got in the ground, and Mayfield read his calf perfectly, staying athletic with a sharp flank. The 2020 world champ made a smooth tie and set the pace with a 7.2.
Shane Hanchey took an aggressive start and had great follow through on his loop. The 2013 world champ used his slack correctly and took a wrap and a hooey, matching Mayfield’s 7.2-second run.
Reigning World Champ Riley Webb took one swing and got it on his calf fast. He was patient with his slack helping him get into his calf good, and he flanked big. He stopped the clock with an 8.0.
Zack Jongbloed took two swings, but once he got on the ground his calf was down when he got to him. Once he got him up, Jongbloed got things rolling and over with quickly with an 8.0.
Ty Harris broke hard to the pin and got it on him quick. Harris went down to a knee when he flanked, and there was a bit more slack than he needed, letting the calf struggle bad.
Kincade Henry was a tick off the barrier but had a great neck catch. Calf was down when he got to him, but he was a nice and let him flack and tie quickly. Henry was 9.9 seconds to move on to the Semifinals.
Marty Yates reached a bit and was unable to make it work, top knotting his calf.
Haven Meged took a great start, and Lil Punch helped get him down the rope quick with his big stop. The 2019 world champ had a big calf, yet he flanked him with ease. His calf strained the tie, and he was longer than he’d have liked. BUT, he’s in for the Semifinals.
Dylan Hancock roped his calf a bit out in front of him and was very aggressive with his rope, despite his calf being off to the right a tad. Hancock came with a big, strong flank and a smooth tie to put a 7.8 on the board.
Cole Clemons took an outstanding shot and got his calf up off the ground quickly. His tie was fast, but he was too quick at the line and broke out and his calf got up.
Hunter Herrin had to get a time to stay alive in the NFR hunt, and he delivered. Herrin got a good start and despite his calf being a bit waspy on the end of the rope, he flanked him easy and had a good tie to be 7.6 seconds.
John Douch roped his calf off to the left, but he fell down once he got out of his stirrup. His calf was down and Douch struggled a bit to get him up, but finished the run with a smooth tie.
