Round 5 of the 2024 NFR kicks off Monday, Dec. 9 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

The tie-down ropers will run the big pen of calves which weigh between 250 and 260. This is the same pen of calves from the second round.

“It will be interesting to see who draws 61 tonight and how they go about trying to get by him,” Lanham Mangold said. “That is the calf Shad had the first time. Unfortunately, that calf is trying to make Jeff and I look bad.”

Caleb Smidt, four-time World Champion noted that there are a few calves that have slowed up, but the majority of the calves have been good on the ground.

“I’m taking my odds Riley will win the round,” Smidt said. “He’s just that good—that much better than everybody else. I did beat him in that match roping the other day.”

Smidt also noted that both Rudy (Riley Webb’s horse) and Rolex (Marty Yates horse) are working great at the Thomas & Mack.

“Rudy is good,” Smidt said. “Marty’s horse looks good, she gave him a little hop last night. He’ll do well if he gets a start in the big pen. That mare is strong, and her deal is being strong. Those two horses are really good. Shad’s horse is good but he looks like he’s playing defense. He needs to do what Shad does and go fast.”
