In just a few short years on the ProRodeo road, Joel Harris has made a name for himself.

The 23-year-old San Angelo, Texas, native has qualified for his second straight National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in 2025 but only started hitting PRCA rodeos in 2022. Before that, he grew up junior rodeoing across Texas alongside his seven-time NFR-qualifying older brother Ty and younger siblings Wyatt and Cheyenne.

“My dad started us when we were 3 and 4 years old,” Harris told CalfRoping.com in 2023. “He made it happen for us.”

His first year on the road in 2022 included wins in Texas (Amarillo, Seminole and Big Spring) and Oklahoma (Chickasha). In 2023, he was a Resistol Rookie contender in a tough bunch of ropers—a feat brother Ty had claimed a few years prior.

That same year, Joel walked away with both the average and year-end titles at the Columbia River Circuit Finals with the help of Ty’s palomino mare Chuchara Sal (“Sally”).

The 2024 season proved monumental for Harris’ rodeo career. Before making his first NFR appearance, he won Pasadena, Texas; Lynden, Washington; and Hermiston, Oregon. He also went head-to-head with Ty for the win at RODEOHOUSTON, ultimately finishing second.

Once in Las Vegas, Harris showed no signs of being a first-timer. He ended the season No. 7 in the world standings and grabbed two NFR round wins—Rounds 5 and 9 (the latter tied with brother Ty)—on Logan Bird’s famous buckskin, Peso.

“There’s so many nerves because you’ve just been waiting and waiting and waiting for two months,” Harris told CalfRoping.com after his Round 5 win. “By Round 4 or 5, I feel like you start to feel like it’s more of a normal rodeo, even though it’s not. So yeah, all kinds of different emotions.”

Harris is now lined up for his second NFR in 2025, sitting 10th in the world with $140,854 won. His 2025 victories include Lakeview, Oregon; Ramona, California; and Oakley, Utah, along with a split-win at Joseph, Oregon. He also added a major off-season victory at the 2025 Shane Hanchey Invitational in October.
